Catherine Ravenscroft successfully represented Amber Valley Borough Council in an appeal brought by a licensed premises against the revocation of its licence. 

The revocation followed a s51 application for review of “The Crib” bar in Ripley town centre which had attracted an unacceptable level of serious incidents of crime and disorder, including incidents involving an employee of the premises. The decision to revoke was also made in light of failures to comply with licence conditions and to record incidents of crime and disorder. The appellant alleged that he had responded to incidents appropriately and that there was a conspiracy against him by Derbyshire Constabulary Licensing Officers. 

At the conclusion of the evidence, which had been heard over three days, the appeal was dismissed. The District Judge determined that the decision was not wrong at the time or on the evidence presented on appeal. Dismissing the appeal DJ Taaffe said there had been incidents of serious violence at the venue which had been “part and parcel of the running of the premises” and that a culture had developed which tolerated an unacceptable level of violence and disorder.
