We are delighted to confirm the agenda and open registrations for our Child Care Conference which will take place in Chambers on the afternoon of Tuesday, 10th June 2025.

We very much hope you will be able to join us and our Chair for the afternoon, Carolyn Jones, alongside eight specialist speakers for an insightful and engaging afternoon discussing Care.

CONFERENCE PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

Session 1- Unpacking allegations: Navigating threshold and beyond
Abigail Turner and Chris Watson will explore the factual foundation of a modern care case from the initial threshold document through to the impact on assessments and how it ultimately links with the welfare outcome. Effective pleadings and threshold responses, evidence gathering, fact-finding hearings, “welfare facts” and allegation pruning will all be covered.

Session 2- Assessing and managing risk: Strategies for effective outcomes
Julie Sparrow and Sandamini Ethakada consider the critical issue of assessing and managing risk in care cases. They will look at what risk means in our current legal context and how Courts evaluate it, both when making interim and final decisions. They will then go on to cover what a robust assessment looks like and the most effective ways to challenge a negative outcome.

Session 3- Mastering Expert Evidence: Strategy and Challenge
Yolanda Pemberton and William Horwood will conduct an in-depth analysis of the current law and procedure with respect to expert instruction. There will be a particular focus on the practicalities of using experts effectively, the importance of the right choice of expert and, ultimately, how and on what basis to challenge expert evidence, both orally and in writing.

Session 4: Planning to permanency: Navigating the adoption journey in care cases
Gemma Bowes and Miranda Lopez conclude the event with a comprehensive review of the adoption process. From initial care planning to final decision making, they will highlight key legal considerations, procedural steps, and hot topics. Common client questions, particularly about post-adoption contact, will be addressed and our speakers will also offer some thoughts on what the future may hold.
