Anthony Burgess

Introduction

Anthony Burgess has worked within the legal system for nearly two decades and has clerked exclusively in family law for over 15 years. He joined St Philips Chambers in 2016 and has now been with the Chambers for 10 years, progressing from Family Diary Team Manager to First Junior. During this time, he has developed a comprehensive understanding of the Family Bar, the legal aid landscape, and both local and national legal communities.

In his current role, Anthony oversees the practices of more than 50 family barristers. He is responsible for strategic diary and practice management, business development initiatives, and supporting the professional growth of individual barristers. He regularly conducts Practice Development Meetings, providing guidance on practice expansion, and long-term career planning.

Anthony manages fee negotiation for privately funded matters and maintains strong relationships with Local Authorities, establishing frameworks for instruction and bespoke fee structures. He has extensive expertise in legal aid, overseeing the billing team and managing High Cost and Events-based billing. He frequently advises solicitors on high-cost case planning and liaises with senior case managers within the LAA’s Exceptional & Complex Cases Team.

Anthony is a member of the West Midlands Resolution Committee and the Institute of Barristers’ Clerks.

Outside Chambers, Anthony supports a range of charitable and community initiatives, including fundraising events and physical challenges. He balances this with family life, spending time with his wife and two daughters, and maintains an active interest in white-collar boxing.
