
Rebecca Wade KC, leading Laura Coton, defended Melanie James for the murder of a vulnerable adult who lived in the care of her and her partner. The deceased was taken to hospital on the 27th November 2022 with nearly 50 rib fractures and multi-organ failure. He passed away three days later. The case involved complex expert evidence.
Melanie James also faced a charge of gross negligence manslaughter, in respect of which following legal argument, Ms Wade KC persuaded the trial Judge there was no case to answer, and it was withdrawn from the jury’s consideration.
James was found guilty of murder following a seven-week trial at Stafford Crown Court before Mrs Justice Jefford and will be sentenced on the 25thSeptember 2026.
