Jennifer Josephs KC, leading Robert Forrest of 2KBW, prosecuted a couple accused of murdering a highly vulnerable man with learning disabilities, who lived with them. The deceased was taken to hospital in multi-organ failure and a state of malnutrition with nearly 50 rib fractures. The Crown’s case was that the Defendants had not only failed to care for him, but had jointly attacked and assaulted him on at least 2 occasions, leading to his death.

Following a seven-week trial at Stafford Crown Court, the jury convicted Melanie James and Kenneth Newton of murder. The case involved complex and extensive evidence from several medical experts, as well as evidence from the various authorities, and numerous civilian witnesses.

Both Defendants will be sentenced on the 25th September 2026.
