Kyran Kanda joined St Philips in October 2024 as a pupil in the Employment, Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence team under the supervision of Colin Baran and Andrew Evans.
Before coming to the Bar, Kyran worked as Senior Legal Adviser and Parliamentary Officer at Protect, the whistleblowing charity. He advised workers across multiple sectors, including healthcare, education and financial services, on the Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998. He advised on drafting protected disclosures, ET1 forms and pleadings. Kyran worked closely with MPs and members of the House of Lords to campaign for reform to whistleblowing legislation. He submitted 8 responses to various government consultations and successfully tabled amendments to the Office of the Whistleblower bill. Kyran delivered several training sessions on whistleblowing best practice to senior managers, HR directors and board members.
In 2023, Kyran was awarded the Nicolas Bratza scholarship by Lincoln’s Inn to work as a Visiting Scholar at the European Court of Human Rights in the Office of President Síofra O’Leary and for Judge Tim Eicke. He wrote several speeches for the President on topics including women’s rights, gender violence and artificial intelligence. He produced briefing notes for the court’s judges on contemporary human rights issues, including a legal analysis of the Rwanda litigation, the Illegal Migration Act 2023 and anti-terror legislation.
Kyran previously worked as a HR Manager for an industry leading clothing manufacturer in the Midlands. He managed various disciplinary procedures, health and safety concerns and pay disputes. This gave him excellent insight into the practical application of employment law and personal injury law.
Kyran spent time working in the Civil Service, where he gained extensive experience of civil litigation, as well as working in the education sector. He has volunteered for several legal charities, including Liberty, Appeal and The Justice Gap, where he advised on discrimination disputes, actions involving public authorities, and cases in the Court of Appeal.
In his spare time, Kyran enjoys playing piano and acting. He has performed in open mic nights and amateur productions of Anything Goes and Twelfth Night, and appeared as a contestant on the Channel 4 show ‘The 100K Drop’. He is an avid theatre-goer, self-confessed film-buff and keen home cook.
