Tom Walkling KC and Carl Templar-Vasey were instructed by Harringtons Solicitors to defend Amy Clark, who was charged with murder, manslaughter, 2 offences of causing grievous bodily harm with intent (s.18), and 3 “allowing” offences, contrary to s.5 of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act 2004. The offences related to her 5-week-old daughter. She was jointly charged with the father, Sean Jefferson. The case was heard by Brunner J at Stafford Crown Court.

At the close of the 7-week trial, and following defence submissions, the prosecution withdrew the charges of murder and manslaughter against Ms Clark, and the jury were directed to acquit her of those offences. Following deliberations, the jury acquitted Ms Clark of the s.18 offences and convicted her of the s.5 offences. Mr Jefferson was convicted of murder and causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
