Peter Haynes KC appeared before the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague last week as lead Defence Counsel for Joseph Kony during a confirmation of charges hearing.
The hearing was historic in that it was the first time the ICC had held such proceedings in absentia. In assessing whether charges against Kony, the former leader of the Lord’s Resistance Army in Uganda, should proceed to trial, the Court entered uncharted territory in international criminal law.
