St Philips Chambers is deeply saddened to mark the passing of The Right Honourable Lord Justice William Davis, who died on 7 June 2025.

Before embarking on a distinguished judicial career, Bill, as he was known was a much-valued member of Chambers and served as Head of Chambers during a period of important growth and evolution. He was a calm and steady leader, known for his clarity of thought, deep integrity, and generosity with his time and experience. His influence helped to shape the professional culture of Chambers and he remained a point of pride and inspiration for many here long after moving on to full-time judicial appointment.

As Recorder of Birmingham, he brought the full weight of his experience to one of the countryโ€™s busiest Crown Courts, where he was widely respected for his authority, efficiency and fairness. Those who appeared before him โ€“ or sat with him โ€“ recognised not only his legal acuity, but his humanity and good judgement.

His subsequent contributions to the justice system were significant and far-reaching. From his time as a High Court Judge to his appointment to the Court of Appeal, he brought to each role the same intelligence, judgement and fairness that defined his time in practice. His work on the Sentencing Council and in judicial leadership roles underlined a lifelong commitment to justice in the public interest.

Those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him remember not only his legal skill, but the respect with which he treated others, and the wicked sense of humour that often lit up even the most serious occasions. These qualities have remained part of the ethos of St Philips to this day.
We extend our sincere condolences to his wife, Ginny, and children, Rosie and Ralph, as well as all who mourn him.
