Paul was called to the Bar in 1982 and took Silk in 2001. He practises principally from 29 Bedford Row and joins St Philips having chosen to relinquish his door tenancy at 3 Paper Buildings.

Paul was appointed a Recorder in 2000 and a Deputy High Court Judge in 2004 and is regarded as one of the leading family silks in the country. He has a national reputation for his work in cases relating to allegations of serious non accidental injury and homicide, especially those concerning scientific or medical issues. Commentators note that, “he understands complex medical history and can cross-examine the country’s most eminent medics with ease” and that  “‘he is simply the best public law children lawyer, he has an excellent forensic mind and is a fantastic tactician”.

Paul has contributed several articles to the Family Law Journal and co-written a chapter on the law relating to kinship care (Assessment in Kinship Care, edited by Talbot & Calder 2006). He is also a member of Lincoln’s Inn, the South Eastern Circuit and the Family Law Bar Association.

Head of the St Philips Children Group, Elizabeth Walker, commented: “We are absolutely thrilled that Paul has chosen to join St Philips. He is a nationally renowned practitioner with an incredible reputation. We are particularly delighted that he will be able to join forces with John Vater QC, also a door tenant at St Philips, to enable us to provide an exceptional source of expertise in the most complex cases.”

Paul added: “I am delighted to join St Philips, who I consider to have a fine family team and a great history.”
