Introduction

After having completed her degree course in Manchester, Nergis-Anne Mathew completed her legal education in London. Shortly after having been called to the Bar in 1981 she became a member of Inner Temple Chambers.

Initially, her practice included all areas of law, but she quickly decided to specialise in family law. In 1999, she relocated to Birmingham and joined St Philips Chambers. Her present practice includes all areas of family law. She represents parents, local authorities and children.

Public Law Care and Adoption

Nergis-Anne has a special interest and expertise in NAI in infants and young children; to include fractures, head injuries and shaken baby. Other areas of interest and expertise include non-organic failure to thrive, sexual abuse, cases involving severe neglect and also cases involving parental drug and alcohol addiction.

She has appeared in lengthy and complicated matters both in the High Court and the County Court and regularly represents local authorities as well as parents and children by their guardian. Her sympathetic approach to parents and her ability to assist parents in coming to terms with a process which they can often find overwhelming, is well known.

Nergis-Anne has represented individuals with special needs and limited understanding. She is well respected for her ability to identify issues and she relishes the prospect of cross-examining expert witnesses. She possess the ability to assimilate information quickly in complex and lengthy matters.

Private Law Children and Domestic Abuse

Nergis-Anne regularly represents parents in intractable and long running private law disputes, her ability to assist a parent to move forward towards a resolution in what has often been an intrenched dispute is well recognised. However, her ability to cross- examine ferociously in an intractable situation is also a well recognised attribute. Nergis-Anne has regularly appeared in lengthy hearings involving fact findings of domestic and sexual abuse, where she has appeared for the victim and in other matters for the purported perpetrator.

Nergis-Anne has also represented parents in applications to remove the child/children from the jurisdiction, in cases where the move has been either a temporary move for a holiday or a permanent removal from the jurisdiction.

Nergis-Anne also regularly represents parents in Child abduction cases, both Hague convention and Non-Hague convention cases. She regularly appears in the High Court in such matters.

Another area of practice is that of Child Trafficking.
