VAT, excise, customs and wider taxation

St Philips Chambers is fortunate to have regulatory barristers who have won selection to the Treasury Solicitors’ Panel of Counsel.  They are briefed to appear on behalf of Government departments and agencies such as the Home Office, HM Revenue and Customs, the Department of Trade and Industry, and the Health and Safety Executive.

The work carried out by the Panel Counsel in Chambers on behalf of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs has led to the development of Chambers’ expertise in the field of VAT, Customs and Excise Duty, as well as other indirect taxes such as the Aggregates Levy and Landfill Tax.

No other Chambers outside London can rival the depth of experience or profile of St Philips’ indirect tax practitioners, which has been built up over 15 years.  Counsel have acted on behalf of the Revenue in leading judgments in the field of penalties for VAT evasion, missing trader fraud, and the seizure and detention of excise goods.  St Philips’ Counsel are regularly briefed in Court of Appeal and Upper Tribunal matters, as well as appearing across the British Isles in the First Tier Tribunal.  In the last year, for example, Counsel have represented HMRC in cases against General Motors UK Ltd, the European Tour Operators’ Association and The Royal College of Paediatricians.

St Philips Chambers revenue practitioners bring to bear a depth of experience, quality and clarity of advice and a flexibility of approach, which are sought after and valued by all those who instruct them.
