Ben is ranked as a Leading Junior for Crime in the Legal 500 2019 (Tier 1) and identified as a specialist in murder and fraud. He is described as “self-assured and excellent on his feet.”
Ben is listed in Chambers & Partners 2019 (Crime – Midlands Bar – Band 2) as primarily defending in “heavyweight criminal matters”. He is described as “super talented, super-efficient” with “outstanding judgment”, and as being “all over the law, very bright and very capable.”
Ben’s practice is in criminal and regulatory law. He has expertise in complex cases: particularly white collar & corporate crime; organised crime; serious sexual offences; and homicide. He undertakes private client defence work for individuals and companies in a range of matters and his clerks are able to agree structured fees on a tailored basis.
Crime: recent work includes a multi-million pound broadcasting fraud as leading junior; a gang-related double-shooting; a drive-by shooting with an automatic weapon; ongoing litigation regarding a complex real estate fraud. He is ranked as a Level 4 CPS prosecutor, the highest grade, and is on the specialist CPS lists for Serious Crime; Rape; and Confiscation.
Regulatory: current and recent work includes a high-profile Health & Safety theme park fatality; a major Environmental prosecution concerning the largest covered recycling plant in Europe. He is on the Attorney General’s List of Specialist Regulatory Advocates in Health and Safety and Environmental Law (Band B).
Ben has appeared in the High Court numerous times in Judicial Review cases and many times in the Court of Appeal.
Alongside the above, Ben has for some time been working and advising on a posthumous reference to the Criminal Cases Review Commission regarding the conviction in 1917 of members of a Derby family for conspiracy to murder the then Prime Minister, David Lloyd George.
Ben has also advised the BBC and ITV on legal matters in relation to scripts for television dramas including Doctors and Coronation Street.
