Under section 46 of the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the President of the Family Division, Sir Andrew McFarlane, has appointed St Philips family barrister Jack Redmond to be a nominated judge of the Court of Protection in an expansion of his fee-paid judicial role as a Recorder. He has been assigned to hear cases in the midlands region.

Jack was appointed a Recorder in 2020 and the Lord Chief Justice assigned him to sit in the Family Court on the Midland Circuit. His new role will see him sitting part-time at circuit judge level within both the Family Court and now also the Court of Protection, as a Tier 2 judge.

The Court of Protection was created by the Mental Capacity Act 2005 to hear those cases determining financial and welfare decisions for those who lack capacity. Its President is Sir Andrew McFarlane and it’s Vice-President is Sir Anthony Hayden. His Honour Judge Rowland is the Regional Lead Judge for the midlands.
